Is it safe for a woman to travel to India on her own?

Is it safe for an African-American woman to travel to India alone? ?

  • I will stay in New Delhi for 9 months and spend some weeks in the Sultanpur District of U. P. Would I be more sexually harassed than the average American woman traveler or will men leave me alone because of my skin color? I understand that there is some racism in India. Will I be ignored by Indian men and women? Will I be able to eat at restaurants or denied service? How will I be treated in academic and professional circles? What advise can you offer for an African American woman traveling by herself in India? thanks

    Hi I am from New Delhi. As far I know, there is no kidnapping case happened with african american women or men in last 10 years. There have been sexually harrasement with white women. No will deny you any food, as long you pay for that and they might charge you extra money being you are a foreigner, everybody try to get maximum money out of you. It is general practice worldwide (70%) with any foreigner. If you tell me what is ur purpose to stay in sultanpur , may be i can give u some more facts abt that place, Professional and academically there is no problem with any skin colour in delhi, they might tease you when u become very gud friend of them but will not hurt you.

I dont think it an good idea. There was a article that african american men has 4 times more chance to get kidnapped or be killed. So if it is women, they are going to be kidnapped about 2times more then white women

Well India is still a safer country. But I would advice that do not travel alone in the city here after dark. In Delhi, even local Indian girls, try not roam around alone in the city. In academic and professional circles you will be fine. Dont worry about that. I think you should not face any sexuall harrasment as an african american.

Like any poor country, when people hear your accent they assume u are rich because u speak English. They are going to try and con you so make sure u know the currency in and out. They might try and pick pocket or rob u. Avoid speaking to strangers unless absolutly necessary. Also in India there is a cast system that is based on someones colour. The darker you are, the less status u have, the lighter u are the more u will get noticed and respected. I know its wrong, but im just telling you the truth.

hey u are most wellcome to india. as long as ur wellcome factor is concerned, gone are the days wen we ppl have enough time to gaze others. it totally depends upon u, whether u love to be alone or u wd like to socialise. i duunno from where u have got conception that indians adopt racism. if sm1 tries to be familiar wid u , u ll feel sexually harassed and if sm1 maintains distance, u racially abused. so sweetheart all these evils are the state of ur mind. in every country there are sm bad ppls but many are very gud too. so y only india, whereever u go wtever u do, u need to safeguard ur dignity first. anyway! i shd not behave fatherly, u are most wellcome to india. come and njoy the indian life style. socialise urself bt with quality ppls only. educational and professionl socity are very warm welcomers. u ll feel priviledged by our warm heart hospitality.

As long as you do not indulge in any anti-social or anty nation activities and do not violate the laws and rules of the country, you will have no problem in India.
