First Time Traveller In India?

Traveling to India for the first time?

  • I am saving up to travel to India in the spring of 2013, I am currently planning on saving $4000. Do you think this is an accurate amount of money to save to include round trip international flight and 14 days worth of traveling in India? I am planning on going to Agra, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, and the Kanthambore national park. Also do you think that it is wise for an American first time visiting India to hire a guide? I have been looking at tours of India and they are all pretty expensive, if we are able to get around India without to much hassle and enjoy it without a guide that would be great. Thanks!

  • Answer:

You say I, then you say we. $4000 is more than enough (assuming the flight is about $1500), if its per person. I have visited many places in India and never needed/wanted or even considered a guide. I hired a car and driver once and it was the biggest waste of money. Plan your route, book a few train tickets (by far the best way to go and meet people and see what people call real India) as you have to book quite far in advance, and enjoy. You will be fine without a guite and better off or it. Finally, I would suggest staying in guest houses as opposed to faceless hotels. Guest houses will give you a chance to meet people and get tips from people who have just been to where you are going (and indeed the staff) Enjoy

Things get expensive by the hour. There cannot be an accurate prediction on how much will be the entire expenditure. It is best to travel in a group (tour packages). It maybe expensive but the benefits are immense. Your choice of food, detailed itinerary, safety in numbers and many more. Traveling alone to these places is not 100% safe. It is always best to travel in the company of people of your own native land so you will not be too homesick and feel left out. There are several international operators who take you from Delhi by luxury buses to Agra, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Udaipur, Khajuraho where the Ranthambore forest is located. This is a very common route so its my suggestion to hang on to a group and avoid venturing alone.

Hi Sam 4000 USD is more than sufficient to explore India. It will cover your international air and local travel as well. The best way to explore is travelling on your own. You can rent a car if you can affort. The entire trip in a car will approximately cost 500 USD with driver ,fuel, toll , parking etc.The driver will also become a de-factto guide. The hotels can been booked online by you as per your budget. The best would be arrange home stays so that you can experience the Indian home and its hospitality Happy planning Travel is learning [email protected]
