Why is India/Indians SO EXTREMELY obsessed with fair skin?

  • Okay this is a bit long but PLEASE ANSWER.. before we get into this let me tell you I'm half Indian and half Arab so I'm in no way trying to disrespect, why is it that India is extremely obsessed with fair skin? I've been watching bollywood since I was as young as 3-4 and it seems to me like these days it's just full of girls who CAN'T EVEN ACT and are just put on screen because they're FAIR Ex : KATRINA KAIF!!!!! now many people may say oh give them all a break but why? I mean there's way more talented actresses than her like Konkona Sen or Jiah Khan that don't even get chances yet so many bollywood people including the Katrinas & Deepikas, Priyankas [she so bleaches her skin] & Aishwaryas get the chance to act in movies all crappy just mostly cause they're fair. SO many ads come out all the time saying dark skin is not beautiful, no man will ever love you if you have dark skin [ PRIYANKA CHOPRA & SAIF AD ] or saying that you won't get jobs or respect if you're dark?! or ads that say "White is right" like WHAT THE HELL? so if you're not white you're not right and don't deserve to live? B/S honestly I'm sooo sick and tired of this all, India has SO MANY PROBLEMS already and so much poverty is happening yet these people who are famous all they have time for is dancing acting and making their own people feel bad about the colour of their skin and degrading their own selves because they themselves use ton of that stuff. It just makes me so angry cause Indians are beautiful people yet they totally lose respect for themselves and one another and ugh I just hate this mentality of theirs. I've been around many of them and when they see someone dark it's like " Eww they look like a maid " yet when they see someone fair it's like " Wow she's beautiful " even when she's PLAIN AVERAGE. It's just so lame.. seriously it's BEYOND LAME. Sorry to go off on this but please explain why this is happening? Surely it must be more than just back then, doesn't most of it have to do with self esteem issues? Please help. :D

    Indians are really conscious about their skin.. Nobody wants to be tagged as 'darker skinned'. Some dont really care but some go crazy hence all the fairness creams and stuff.. I had this one guy on orkut (the social networking site for losers) who taunted me cuz he thought I was dark skinned (he was from North India so apparently hes fair skinned) and called me ugly! Of course I didnt bother cuz it doesnt matter.. I keep getting tanned and so my color changes everytime.. And Im from Mumbai where I know ppl are crazy and want to be fairer than they are.. My mother went through that phase too.. And Bollywood is just a big rip of Hollywood so everyone wants to look like the Hollywood celebs and hence our Bollywood idiots do their skin whitening and what not..

Well it's not only the indians. I knew a filipino (and yes, that's how you spell it) a few years ago and she adored white skin. She had dark skin though. She wasn't very black.. she was like mid-tone brown. She would always buy Fair and Lovely and apply it onto her body and face every day. She would tell me that in Phillipines, white skin is considered very beautiful. In a world like this, white has become the more favorable skin color over black. It is considered more beautiful. And about Bollywood, DUH! It's the movie business which usually looks for good-looking people before deciding if the person actually has any talent! And as I said, white is more preferable to the majority of people.

It's because of the caste system, beauty depicted by fair skin goes right back to before India was a nation, when Aryan tribes from Iran moved into what became India and set themselves up as the ruling classes. It has nothing to do with White people (Europeans)
