Is Mumbai expensive to live in?

Our friends in Mumbai: Where best in Mumbai can a student live? What is the average monthly cost?

  • What is the cost of living in Mumbai? What advise would you give a full-time, vegetarian student on where to live off-campus in Mumbai for an 8 months' stay? I need info on transport, food, rent, hostels - anything and everything that a student will need to know. thanks.

  • Answer:

You were not clear about the locality of stay, so here is the address of the institute at Belapur- Aegis School of Telecommunication New Mumbai Campus,Mahesh, Block B Plot No. 37, Sector 15, Central Business District(CBD ) Belapur,Navi Mumbai http://www.aegisedu.org/contactaegis.htm From the FAQs page- 15. Is there any hostel facilities available for Aegis Students? Aegis has hostel facility in the academic building, which is very convenient to students. Hostel rooms has WiFi internet connection. Upon request, the institute also arranges for one bed room or two bed room apartments at a walking distance from campus. So here are some tips- 1. Belapur/ Nerul at Navi Mumbai offers cheaper house rentals. You can rent a flat for about 3000- 8000 INR per month depending on your budget. You can share the flat with other fellow students- that will work out much cheaper. HOWEVER, be prepared to pay about 6 months rental deposit as advance and brokerage of one/ two month rental to the brokers (thats the rate). You can search for paying guest accommodation also. http://www.ywcabombay.com/serhost.htm http://www.vashi2panvel.com/Navi-Mumbai-News/index.php?arr=item/746 http://www.whereincity.com/classifieds/new-mumbai/property/1.htm 2. You can make your own food at home. Or you can ask for "tiffin" , which is a standard meal supplied by local households in a tiffin box. For tiffin you would have to pay 500-800 per month. The other option is eating out. A good vegetarian thali of assorted rice, roti and sabzi /dal platter will cost Rs. 50-90, depending on the quality of food. Now do the maths. So for food you would surely need about 2000- 3000 INR in a month including breakfast, fruits etc. Milk cost about Rs. 22/- a litre. 3. Transport will not be a problem. Use the BEST buses, get a three monthly bus pass made ( very very cheap), a train pass and you can travel without hassles. Local transport in Navi Mumbai also includes Auto rickshaws and taxi cabs. http://paganel.eu/mumbai/index.html

Mumbai is a costly city. It infact is the costliest city in India. Room rents are high. It would be wise to get a PG accommodation, with food. You could perhaps share a room with another PG.
