What is a widget? Why would I want a widget?

I have seen the offer to "put a widget" on your home page, and have seen such diverse widgets as "yahoo widget" and 'national geographic widgets". What is a widget, and why would I want one? Are they useful? For what purpose? Is there some financial gain to having a widget? If so, who benefits from the widget? Are widgets an unwitting tool of advertising and marketing?
