For example, a number of plug-ins for Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator browsers enable them to display different types of audio or video messages. Plug-ins are usually free and can be found and installed relatively easily. The home pages for Netscape and Internet Explorer present a selection of plug-ins that work with their browsers. Once you have found a plug-in, it is relatively simple to download it and install it if you are using Windows 95 or higher operating systems with Netscape or Internet Explorer version 4.0 or higher browsers. Downloading and installing plug-ins with earlier browsers and operating systems can be more difficult.

Say you buy or download a program (for example I bought microsoft office). You can go to that company's website and download plug-ins (which are additions to programs, like different backgrounds for pages, clip art, so on). Now plug-ins don't work without the program itself.

plug-ins are little pieces of software that "plug in" to the application you are plugging them in to. you plug it in by placing it somewhere in the system folder, or it can be automatically installed. for example, at this moment there is a plug-in in my itunes system folder that displays the album art of the current song I am listening to (Behemoth-Demigod) in my computer's dock, replacing the itunes icon (I use a Mac). I wouldn't be able to do this with itunes "as is" so I used a plug-in to slightly alter it.
