What is a widget please?, never heard of a widget. what does it do?

it's like little things to add onto your desktop. some make it easier to connect to the internet without opening up browsers, yahoo search widget. Other's like the clock and trash bins make your desktop icons bigger and more interesting than the ones we usually have. The whole thing for me cluttered up my comp and I just got rid of it in the end.
