In the context of the internet, a widget is a piece of code that you can pop on a page, provide some basic info and it provides a function. Such as a count down clock, weather for your area, news, random pictures on a theme etc. Some only work on your desktop and some can work with any internet pages or blogs.

Hi, 1. DEFINITION A "Widget" has many definitions, but I guess your question is IT related; In this sense, a widget is a small stand alone application that appears on your desktop in order to provide specific information: 2. EXAMPLE For instance, right now I have 4 widgets opened on my desktop: - The 1st one gives me the weather for the upcoming week in L.A - The 2nd one is a calendar - The 3rd gives me simultaneously the time in California and in Paris where my parents live - The Last one displays random pictures of my vacations 3. ORIGINS As for many things in computers, they originate from Mac OS, as a part of the Dashboard system (you press a key and your screen darkens with widgets appearing, until you press the same key again, putting the normal screen back on). They were then introduced to PC users by Yahoo with "Yahoo Widgets" that I suggest you download if you want to give widgets a try: http://widgets.yahoo.com/ There are many widget engines available now, including the Google one (Called "gadgets"), Konfabulator (Mac), those coming with the Opera browser and of course the original Dashboard (Mac). 4. HAVE FUN WITH YOUR WIDGETS ! Cheers

An unspecified device. Usually it does something useful, clever. It can be something that does not exist. For example, you might talk about a factory that makes widgets, and there is no clue what these are,and its irrelevent. That allows you to talk about the machinery or software or systems that produce the widgets. The widgets themselves are not important.

There are many types of widget - from something in the bottom of a beer can that releases gas when it's opened to produce froth to small add ons to computer systems (VISTA comes with a colletion of what it calls widgets that you can run on your desktop). But basically it's any small device that doesn't have another technical name

A small ball found in the bottom of a beer can to excite the beer and make it taste as if it had been pulled through a pump, allegedily. I disagree and compare it to tainting the beer and making it taste like plastic.
