What happens when you leave a bag of purchased items at a retail store?

  • I went to Target and was not given one of my bags with a cleaning product, paper plates, and a leapster game. The total cost is around $30. What happens when I call if they don't have the bag there, am I out of luck or will they replace the items? The receipt must be in that bag because I can't find it to prove my purchase.

    If the bag is gone and you have no way to prove the purchase you might be out of luck. It might also depend on if you used cash or credit. Your credit card statement can be used as proof of purchase, or your bank statement if it was debit.

The best way to find out what will happen when you call, is to call. If you're absolutely positive you weren't given a receipt, then it must be in the bag as you said. If it was there and you left it behind, or if the salesperson just somehow neglected to give it to you, then possible the salesperson put it aside in hopes that you would call. Even if that sales person isn't there, whoever his/her replacement was might know how something like that would have been handled and knows where it is if something was put aside. Personally, I'd show up there and speak to someone in person.

If you have the receipt you can get your items back. If you don't have the receipt all you can hope for is that someone turned the bag in to customer service.
