Can I bid lower than starting bids on ebay?

Do people ever fake bid on ebay - with no intention of buying?

  • It's my first time selling on ebay and i've had a clear out of clothes I don't wear anymore. Anyway, on 1 of my items I listed the starting price as 0.99p. This item has generated several "watchers" but no bids. But today I've logged in and seen that someone placed a bid for £9,00. I'm confused as to why! The starting price is 0.99p so why would they jump straight in and make a £9.00 bid?? Do they just do this to mess about? What would be the point of that?!

    Yes there are people who will bid with no intentions of buying. As for the bid what you are seeing is their proxy bid. This way if anyone else comes in to bid their bid will not go over the first bidder's proxy. It no one else bids they will get the item for the starting bid, that is unless you put a reserve amount on the item, then their proxy will show up as a normal bid. This in it's self does not show they are a bad bidder. If he wins the auction you have 4 days until you can relist the item if they do not pay and only if you do a NPB.

i found an outfit i really wanted on ebay and it started at $0.99 and i bid $25 on it right away so if someone else bid, it would go up to my $25 and i might have a chance to win it

No worries, it just sounds like this person wants that item. If they don't pay you four days after the auction ends, you open an unpaid item dispute against them. If they don't pay four more days after that, you can close the dispute against them, get back your final value fees, relist the item, and block that bidder from ever bidding on your items again.

Sometimes buyers see items that they really want, so instead of messing about they will place a bid that they are willing to pay for the item.
