Paying with paypal off ebay?

Hi I am using paypal/ebay for the first time, i recently verified my paypal account for the first time. I received an invoice to pay for an item, and it went to a paypal screen where I could pay with credit card or log-in. I thought I should log-in. It then went to a page where I clicked 'pay now' .. and it notified me that there was an unsufficient amount in my paypal account. Theres only $2 in there because I assumed it would just use credit card. Now I am not sure if.... the payment has NOT taken place...or if it HAS gone through and it is waiiting to take money from my credit carD? it says -- payment status: pending cheers
