Can I buy something off of Ebay if I'm not a member online with them?

I don't like Ebay for some reason, but my mom does. She wants to buy something and I say no. Do I have to make an account with Ebay to buy things from it? Is it like buying things from ordinary people? I'm sorry, I'm just clueless on what Ebay actually is. haphazard_artist
