im going to sell an item on ebay. and obviously whoever wins the item is where im suppose to ship it to. i know the price of shipping depends on the weight and location to which im shipping it to. but how do i know how much to charge for shipping if i dont know yet where im shipping to? its so confusing...thanks in advance!

Answer:
Simple. Items below 13 ounces cost about $4.00 (first class mail), pass that, $8.95 (parcel post). Make sure to buy delivery confirmation, for your protection. Add $2.00 more for your handling fee.

First you need to have a rough idea of what it will weigh when packaged. Try looking up the USPS site, it gives all that info. Select some zip code at the other side of the country to see what the max would be. Add a little bit for safety and to cover the cost of boxes/paper etc. Buyers on Ebay are used to paying more than the actual stamp price for shipping.

Go to the shipping wizard, located right where you put in the shipping price as you list the item. You will need the approximate weight of the packed item. Once you put that weight in, follow the prompts and the wizard will give you a price. I always charge the price for the furthest destination from my home, since you don't know exactly where the winning bidder will be. Also you can use the free priority mail shipping boxes from the post office, they have set prices for each size box. The drawback with these is that they are priced higher than parcel post, and only offer four sizes of boxes. Ebay buyers are used to paying a flat fee for a package, no matter where they live, since ebay insists on a shipping fee posted with each auction, so no worries. You can always reimburse the buyer any overage if you desire, once the package has been shipped. I do this sometimes if the amount is very different, at least 2.00 difference, but it isn't necessary. And just a fyi, the online usps chart to determine shipping prices is way off. I don't know why, but it just is, especially with international shipping rates, it quotes about 6-7 dollars higher than actual prices. So I don't trust it at all. The shipping wizard on ebay is usually the most accurate.
