How To Sell Or Buy Ivory?

Ebay done selling ivory products.. what is ivory????

  • http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20070606/ts_alt_afp/usitinternetspecies curious what ivory products they won't sell for people from other countries-- is this the soap ivory or what?? I'm lost!!! not that I wanted to buy any or anything like that : )

  • Answer:

Ivory is the tusk of elephants. To get it, you must kill the elephant. This was done in the past, legally; it is still being done today illegally by poachers. That is why they don't want us to buy it anymore. It makes people continue to poach and kill the few elephants we have left. There is also mammoth ivory, which is from the tusks of excavated mammoth carcasses, which people can get special licenses to acquire and sell. But not much is available.

Ivory is the most common product of Elephant Tusks. Perhaps ebay will no longer sell products made of ivory because many elephants are killed by poachers. I think that killing elephants may be illegal in many of the countries that they exist in. Ebay is probably seeking to avoid giving profits to people who support the killing of the elephants.

Ivory refers to products made from elephant tusks. The reason trade in ivory is illegal world over is that there was fear that poachers would wipe out elephants in Africa whom were killed because of peoples desire for their 'white gold'.

Ivory is a white hard substance that is taken from a living thing. Usually, when people speak of ivory, they mean elephant tusks, but whales' teeth and wart hog tusks count as well. You might have seen ivory in old pianos: the white keys used to be made out of ivory. ("Tickling the ivories.") Usually you have to kill an animal to get its ivory, so many animal rights people are against ivory trade, although it is possible to harvest ivory without killing the animal.

Ivory is the teeth of animals. "True" ivory comes from elephants and mammoth; however, the term is generally applied to the tusks of other mammals, and some synthetics. Chemically, ivory is similar to bone and antler, and comprises a collagen matrix with a mineral component. Unlike bone, ivory has no blood vessel system, and is therefore more dense. The most commonly found ivories in North America come from elephant, walrus, sperm whale, and hornbill. It is possible to tell these ivories apart, as they are structurally different.
