How to return an item to the store?

Do I have to send back the EXACT item back if I am forced to return back an item to an online store?

I ordered an item online from a store and had it shipped to a friend of mine. I do not want to trouble my friend, so I am thinking of buying a duplicate of that item and send it back to the store. I am not sure if it will have the barcode or not and I just want to know if it would matter if it's the same duplicate item that I send instead of the EXACT item.
Answer:

depending on what it was, it will be serialised ...it matters.If you send it back and its not the same item you'll have to pay for postage to retrieve it and you wont get a refund.The store may choose not to deal with you again as well
