Where did my toolbar go?

Where does the toolbar go ?

I am using Firefox 3.5.6 and downloaded the latest toolbar which installed OK but never appeared on restart. When I look in the view/toolbar menu it ain't listed. It is however in the Tools/Add-ons menu so it is definitely installed, or is it ?. Here's a weird thing, when I click on the configure button I get a blank configuration screen ????. I have uninstalled and reinstalled loads of times over the past week with exactly the same outcome. Here is another really odd thing, today it appeared, like magic, remained for 2 hrs and then disapeard after a firefox restart. Any ideas most welcome
