How does George Orwell's 1984 reflect or criticize the history, society, or culture of Great Britain?

• How does George Orwell's 1984 reflect or criticize the history, society, or culture of Great Britain? I am writing an essay for my British Literature class and I need to explain how three of the works we read this year reflect or criticize Great Britain. Quotes are preferred, but any information would be appreciated.

  1984 was written, I'm sure you know, in 1948. It was a guess of Orwell's view of what the world would be like in 44 years. I'm not familiar with Britain's history but in general Orwell built of what world society was. The t.v. was invented in 1946, as we know the "telescreen" was a huge part of the book. He wrote the book 2 years after so the technology was very new. "Big brother" is a mixture of dominant world leaders who have been looked down upon as a whole. Stalin was supposed to be included in this. The paper weight, is suppose to symbolize winston in his own world, trapped but able to look out. It is also suppose to symbolize his and the girls (cant remember her name) relationship in the hotel. When the people find out about them, the paper weight breaks, which is also their relationship breaking. I read the book last year and absolutely loved it. Hope i helped a bit.
