How to remove/change automatic Yahoo! search from the Firefox ADDRESS bar?
-
I'm using Firefox 3.5.2. and when I write something other than a valid site address in the address bar (not the search bar!) I'm automatically directed to Yahoo! search results. I don't remember ever ticking an option to have this as default, and it's rather annoying. I'd like to know: 1) How I can change the search engine? 2) Is this a built-in feature? Does Firefox 3.5.2. automatically come with the Yahoo search engine? If not, where could have I gotten it from?

Answer:
I just had to replace my modem and my internet provider snuck that in when they updated everything. Really annoying. The following fixed it for me. It will reset it back to the default. It came from this site: http://www.scholarshiphunter.com/firefoxyahoosearch.html I'd go read their explanation, they mention a few ways you could have picked it up, but I copied the pertinent steps to fix it below. Step 1: Open a new Firefox browser window. Step 2: Type about:config in the search field and press Enter. Step 3: Click the "I Will Be Careful" button if necessary. Step 4: Scroll to find a configuration key titled: keyword.URL Step 5: Select "keyword.URL" and right-click, then hit "Reset" from the drop-down menu.

In Firefox - you could try Tools | Options | Privacy .... at the bottom Location Bar - When using the location bar, suggest ___ and use the drop-down list to select Nothing. You said 'not the search bar' but as far as I know that's where you change the search engine ... there's a drop-down list on the right part of the small icon If the automatic Yahoo search is an add-on ... you might check for it in Tools | Options | Main ... at the bottom Manage Add-ons I've found when you install programs that use the net .. ie Yahoo .. MSN .. etc ... evvveryone has a toolbar or an add-on ... a lot of times during the installation these are check marked by default to be installed .. I always scour every page of installations for those and remove the check marks ... one possible way you got it Hope you get it solved
