Answer:
I am a 5-time host mom and volunteer with Youth For Understanding (YFU). I would suggest checking out YFU - when I've asked other exchange students why they chose YFU, they either said because YFU gave them more bang for their buck or that someone they trusted recommended YFU. I do have to say, however, that many agencies in the USA have suspended their programs TO England/Scotland/Wales/UK due to difficulties in getting student visas. It's quite possible that these same agencies have suspended programs FROM the same area. No matter who you choose, make sure it's an organization listed with the Council for Standards on International Educational Travel (csiet.org). They routinely audit programs for quality and will insure that cases like those in the CNN story below don't happen. I won't pretend that YFU is the ONLY good program around, I just happen to think it's the best. A note about playing American football: At most schools (the bigger the school is, the worse this problem is), football is HIGHLY competitive and only the very best players will get to play at the varsity level. While most schools will have junior varsity teams, many coaches still only play the best players. It is possible that you will go to all of the practices, work your butt off doing all the drills and such, and still stand on the sidelines during games. It is also possible that you could be placed in a smaller school where you don't have to compete so much for a spot on the team. Sometimes there are also recreational leagues in some cities. It's impossible to tell how things will go - just be ready for anything. Good luck to you!

I'm not sure. I once offered to host female exchange students from Scandinavia, my only requirements was that they be 18 to 21, tall and 110 to 135 pounds. Twins would have been a bonus. But, after a visit from local law enforcement I figured that it wasn't a very good idea. I'm still not sure why, I just wanted to help them out with a place to stay and maybe teach them about photography and maybe movie editing. Oh well. Good luck with that. Glad I could help.

You might be better off, studying at universtity there. I spent a year at an American College, I studied American Studies and the college I was at (Swansea) had an exchange programme with American Universities. Check out which universtities have American Studies available, and which do participate in exchanges. You could try out for american football there, and if you're good enough, may be able to transfer for the rest of your degree. Pro teams take the majority of their players via the colleges. Oh and at American High Schools, they finish at 17, University starts then.

Go to your school and talk to someone about it.
