How can i go to a US college when i live in the UK?
-
Right... Im a 15, taking my GCSE'S in may. After this i will leave Highschool aged 16. In september i will start at college/sixth form which is from ages 16-18. From there i plan to take a gap year. When i return i i can go to college/university. However i plan to go to an american college ( Either UCLA, San Diego State or Boston). Providing my grades are good. What do i need to do to be able to get a scholarship or at least accepted by one of these. I have heard about a green card and a student green card but am unsure about what these are Thanks Joel

Answer:
I recommend USC and NYU to your list and UCSD instead of San Diego State, but anyways since you listed mostly public schools UCLA and SD state I don't think you qualify for any scholarship from these schools since they are public. You will need to take the SAT or ACT to apply to any of these schools though I suggest applying to some private schools like Boston (USC, NYU) because the cost of attendance at UCLA and other prestigious public school (Berkeley, University of North Carolina) will cost you the same as attending a private school since you are an international student. Green card is for residents that reside in America and live here on a permanent basis. Since you are only wanting study in America you would just need a student visa, but you cannot get one until you have been accepted into a US Uni and accepted their offer of admission.

To apply to an US college or to see requirements go to the college's web site, go to admissions, then to international students.

"Green card" refers to Legal Permanent Residence. You have to apply for immigration, and you must have a sponsor who is an immediate blood relative. Student visas are temporary, non-immigration visas and students are required to return to their home country immediately upon completion or termination of studies. They are expressly barred from applying for immigration or change of status to any immigration-class of visa. If you are accepted at a university as a foreign student, the school will give you an I-20 form which is required to apply for a student visa. Besides top grades, schools consider test scores on the SAT exams, character references, extracurricular activities, sports, charitable and volunteer work, leadership in student & other organizations, etc. It is not enough to be bright and get good grades -- you need more. And of course foreign students need a great deal of money. It is very expensive to study in the US, and expensive to live, too. The cost of living is not as great a shock for someone coming from the UK as it is for someone coming from most other countries.

Contact the school and ask for an admissions packet and also an international student form. It usually is something that will ask questions about your health, your country of origin, your passport, how you're going to pay for living expenses, and will probably include an application for a student visa. They will help you obtain all the necessary stuff, health insurance, student visa, etc., if you are admitted. If you are also highly exceptional, you can get merit scholarships from the school. But I don't think international students can get federal grants. Just e-mail an admissions counselor at one of the schools. They should be able to help answer all your questions. They probably have applications online. Just google the school names. Oh, and fyi, UCSD (University of California-San Diego) is a much better school than San Diego State. (SDSU is good though) But it is much easier to get into San Diego State than UCSD. I live in San Diego and UCSD is very highly respected. It is known as one of the Ivy's of the West.
