Studying law abroad in Australia.

Working abroad with an Irish Law Degree?

  • I'm currently thinking about studying law in NUIG but I'm not sure if I want to be tied to Ireland for the rest of my life. If I got a degree in Irish law is there a way that I could work abroad as a solicitor/lawyer? I know that different countries might have different rules but any answers will be appreciated. If I was to work abroad it would probably be Australia, the USA or another European country. Thanks

  • Answer:

Hi Michael, Unless you are doing a JD in US law at NUIG then it will not qualify you for the US. EU Directive 2005/36 addresses movement of people in the same profession amongst EU countries. If you qualify in Ireland as a lawyer then you can work in for example Italy advising on Irish law, assuming you are an Irish citizen. However if you want to advise on Italian law while living in Italy, for example, you would need to meet the requirements of Italy for EU citizens.
