How do I become a foreign exchange student?

How to become a foreign exchange student?

  • I'm 13 and my friend and I have been talking about boarding school for awhile, though we knew our parents wouldn't let us and it'd be too expensive. Recently I had this idea of being an exchange student, inspired by this new foreign exchange student at my friend's school. I would LOVE to go to Germany- I don't know German very well and I take Spanish at school because they don't offer German. So anyways I was just wondering where to start?! How much money? Howto convince my mom..?! THANKS!

Hey! So I'm from the USA and am foreign exchanging with rotary in Germany! Check out the rotary international site (just google search it) and see what their program is all about. Usually you are given a choice of four countries after you are interviewed. But I think that you will get in. You would have to say something realllllyyy stupid in interviews to not be chosen. But there is a likely chance that you will not get the country you want. My advice is to really be sure about where you want to go. So also you're 13. In rotary 15 in the minimum age. But for good reason. I would go to Germany when your sixteen, because there are more privledges in my opinion. Also. While waiting to go on exchange. Learn German. Seriously. I didn't learn **** before I came. And now 6 weeks in mein Deutsch ist sehr schlecht! ( My German is very bad) Tell your mother you want to be completely fluent in a foreign languge. Tell her you want to better yourself away from home to prepare yourself for life. Tell her that learning how to handle yourself in a totally new culture away from the world as YOU know it is a great opportunity to prepare yourself in handling life after 18. And it costs 5,000 with rotary. That's the cheapest program there is. And it's one of the best because... 1. They make sure your host families are good people. If you have ANY problems that are a cause for concern they will have you moved into something better. You will also have 3 different host families. So maybe if you just don't really click well with one of your families, there are two other ones that you get to experience. You're not just stuck in a terrible situation for a whole year. 2. Rotary exchange students. They rock. They will become your best friends. There are plenty of events with the Rotary program where you get to also meet people from all over the world! 3. There is a tour of Germany you go on (cost covered by Rotary) and they also offer another tour of all of Europe (but you have to pay like 1,200 euro for that). 4. Rotary gives you a monthly allowance. So in a sense your getting some of your money back, but they just distribute it for you. So yeah that's about it. Email me at [email protected] if you have any more questions. It's not my official email but it's the more anonymous one I give to answer exchange questions! Tchüß!

I would start by researching different exchange organizations. The three I've heard of are AFS, YFU, and Rotary (RYE). I've looked into all three and Rotary is both the most affordable and has the best reputation for safety and happiness. The down side is that you're not guaranteed to get the country you pick. You have to select which countries you're interested in, and they try to put you in one of those. With Rotary, it should be about $5,000 I believe (completely dependent on the price of your airline ticket and how expensive the country you go to is to live in). How to convince your parents? First tell them you're interested and why. Then, ask them to meet with a Rotary representative in your area to ask questions about the program. That should ease their conscience if they're worried about your safety or falling behind in school (which you wont).
