Studying Medicine in USA with UK Bachelors (BSc) Degree?
-
I am a UK citizen with a US Green Card born and education here in the UK currently in my 2nd year of my BSc degree (3 year degree). I have always wanted to study medicine but due to certain circumstances I wasn't able to completely fulfill the requirements for entry straight from sixth form here in the UK. Now since I have a US Green Card I been intrigued by the prospect of studying medicine in the states, though from the research I have done, I have found many varied answers and none that satisfy my particular situation. I have learned that US medical schools requires you to complete certain pre-med courses which consist of bio, chem, physics, english etc.. Now since the UK and US education system is very different in regard to entry paths into medicine, I wanted to know how hard the process would it be for me to enter directly into a medical school in the US with a complete BSc degree. Does anyone have a list of medical schools that waive these pre-med course requirements for international students? I really don't want to spend 4 years in the US completing pre-med because that just means the degree I completed here in the UK would have been a waste of effort and time. If it just takes say a year or 2 then that's fine but not 4 years. For example here is an extract from the University of Chicago regarding entry requirements for Medicine: "If you completed a baccalaureate degree in a country outside of the U.S. or Canada, we require you to complete at least one year of full-time coursework (predominately in the sciences) in a U.S. or Canadian institution. Courses pursued in other English-speaking countries will also be considered." Like I have said, if it takes a year or 2 for pre-med then its fine but this is only one university I have found which has stated that. I wanted to know if anyone else has any other universities in mind? Thank You

Answer:
US medical schools require that applicants complete their undergraduate education in US or Canadian universities. No medical school waives the pre-med requirements. Your best option would be a Postbaccalaureate Premedical Program. These assist individuals to pursue a medical career after they have already received a Bachelor's degree. They generally only take a year or 2 to complete. Search for them here: http://services.aamc.org/postbac/
