Where should I go on exchange in the US?
-
I am a 19 year old, female business major from Perth, Western Australia and I really want to go on exchange to a college in America sometime next year, preferably the 2nd half of the year when it is warmer over there. However, I've never been to America and don't even know when their semesters are and I haven't decided whether want to go for one or two semesters. I have a few universities to choose from but I have absolutely no idea which one to pick. I would like to go somewhere that has a relatively good reputation, good weather and of course somewhere that is fun with a good party and sporting culture and I would like to be able to experience real American campus life! I would also love to be near to beaches but that isn't too important. The universities I can choose from are: - Southern Illinois University, Carbondale - University of Minnesota Duluth - Missouri University of Science and Technology, Rolla - Purdue University, West Lafayette - University of North Carolina Wilmington - University of Richmond -Tulane University, New Orleans - Bellarmine University, Louisville - Hobart and William Smith Colleges, New York - State University of New York at New Paltz - Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond - Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg - University of Oregon, Eugene - Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff - Ohio State University, Columbus If anyone has absolutely any information that would help me it would be great!

Answer:
In the USA, semesters usually run from late-August through December and from January to early May. The first semester will start out warm and end up cold, the second will start out cold and end up warm. Nearly all the colleges on your list are nowhere near beaches. UNC-Wilmington and Tulane would have beaches within a reasonable drive. Getting there from campus might not be easy unless you make friends with someone who has a car and also wants to go to a beach. If you want to go to a college near a beach, see if you can go to Eckerd College in Florida, one of the few colleges that has its own beach. IMHO, beaches, parties, and climate should not be your highest priorities in selecting a US school. However, for warm weather, Tulane would be good. UNC Wilmington would not be bad either. Ohio State might be best for a breadth of US experience - American football, parties, wide variety of class offered, located in a state capital, etc. But it will be cold in Ohio in the winter.

OK, I assume you can look at a map and see which states are on the coast. so that cuts almost all of the schools listed. You have a beach where you live, you have warm weather where you live. Why not try something different. I would suggest you find academics important in your search. You can find a party at any school. but you are not going to last if you don't keep your grades up Second semester starts in January. January and February are usually the worst months for weather. My son is in Tennessee and even there Jan/Feb/March is bad weather. August/Sept/Oct are going to bring better weather for the first semester. But really don't let the weather scare you off. Ohio State University is HUGE. one of the largest schools in the US.

That's a long list of schools and very little information about you so I'll need to go on instinct. I choose.... University of Oregon, Eugene Because it's my feeling. Because I'm a West Coast girl. Because it's got the most liberal atmosphere. I see some party schools there. That's your only war coast school on your list and as Tim Leary taught us here, evolution goes west. Seriously 9 of your schools are in the south or areas of the country that reverberate to the south, neo-conservative, and religious in a believing way. That's not evolutionary. All the schools have real campus life because they are not commuter schools. I'm not interested in saying anything negative but I'd say that's best for you. You are a business major and the west coast hums with ideas and opportunity. And it's the only school of the list near the Pacific Ocean. Look hard enough hand you can imagine you see the land of OZ, ok the Eastern Banks. Seriously, best of luck and have a great time..
