University study...Germany or Canada?
-
Hey. I'm an A-level student and currently have finished 2 A-level subjects, Physics and Math and I'm considering Engineering as a major. I haven't decided where to study yet...but I limited my choices to Canada...coz they got good reputation in university education and Germany...coz its like they're the mother of engineering with lots of famous engineering companies. I was told Canada is a better option because 1. I don't have to learn a new language and 2. My entire school study was in English and as its a universal language...demands in the market prefer those who have degrees with English based study not any other, hence having better job opportunities. Is this true? Idk really...I'm interested in Germany..coz like for example whenever I see a German car made, I drool! and they're worldwide known for their excellence in engineering. On the other hand, all ppl around me advise me to opt for Canada for better chances. Please advice.

If you´re not afraid to work hard (and as an A-level student, you´re obviously in good shape), definitely go to Germany! There´s a heck of a lot more involved here than just your degree... if you go to Germany you´ll become fluent in a second language (invaluable) and probably get a lot more culture (nothing against Canadians, but Germany is a little more unique). Plus, they have the reputation for engineering, especially mechanical. English may be a universal language, but it´s really nice to be able to speak German as well. And yes, companies tend to hire people with English based degrees, but that´s usually because they want their employees to be fluent in English. As a native English speaker, I don´t see that being any problem for you. And congrats on choosing engineering! If you have any other questions, feel free to send an email!

If you do not already speak, read and write German fluently, I would think that even thinking of going to University there would be overwhelming. There are some wonderful schools in Canada for engineering degrees and who support physics and math. It seems Canada would be the best choice for you if you are not fluent in German.

If want to go to Germany, learn German first. It takes about six months at a Goethe Institute, for example. There are no tuition fees in Germany, but living expenses are higher than in Canada. It might take you longer to finish a degree in Germany. Why don't you stay in the UK? I have a degree from Germany, but I work in Canada.
