How do I convince my parents to let me be a foreign exchange student?
-
I really want to be a foreign exchange student. It has been my dream for as long as I can remember. However, when I talked to my parents about it they said no because of how expensive it was but mostly because they were concerned about my safety. I am willing to pay for everything even though I know it is a lot of money but I definitely think that it will be worth it. In fact, I have started saving up my money already and I have quite a bit. I am hoping to go my junior year in high school ( I will be 16-17 years old, I am currently a freshman). I am hoping to use the rotary program (although I am open for other suggestions). So anyways, any ideas on how to convince my parents? Should I talk to them again after I have all the money saved up or should I just talk to them about a month before I would have to sign up for my junior year? Thanks!!

Answer:
Hey! I'm a freshman too, and I have been accepted to the Rotary Program! It's truly the best exchange program out there. It is relatively cheap, 4,100 dollars. That's great for an exchange program! At first, my parents were sooooooo against it. I brought it up early eighth grade. Your only 14, your not going to move out!". I kept at it, I got an application filled it ut, on my own (all 25 pages). When they saw it they were a little hesitant but let me apply. Before applications are do there's a meeting for outbound candidates and parents. It's more of a meeting to convince parents haha. Well, once i was accepted, i found out i will be living in Kyrgyzstan! Okay, some reasons... REASONS FOR EXCHANGE :) Oh, by the way, show your parents my answer, they might like to see this.. * Rotary only picks safe countries and stable countries for your child to go to. * Rotary is very careful about what families you go with, very carefully screened. * You gain fluency in a ew language ( extremely helpful later in life) * Rotary promotes world peace, being an exchange student makes global connections. * You become bi cultural * You learn first hand about cultures * living in another culture, lets you truly understand your own * Expands global perspective * Colleges are more likely to accept you * You return to your host country more mature and experienced PARENTS Please emal me about any questions or concerns, [email protected] I would love to help you kate too, when application time comes around! Thanks! Also email me for skype, or facebook for any stuff i didn't cover, and more about Rotary( also, i would like to hear your parents reactions in your point of view)

look up all the like safety things on the website or whatever. if they have quotes from alumni tell them how it helped theyre lives. and put lots of emphasis on education. make it sound educational and talk a lot about how it will further your education, world knowledge etc...

Ask them what it would take for them to let you go. If it takes a phone call to them every night, then it's worth it.
