Is studying abroad worth it?

  • Ok so all my friends are going to study abroad this summer and I'm pondering whether I should go or not. The main thing keeping me state side is that im scared! I was not born in the US but I feel that ever since I moved here many years ago I have become so Americanized I can't even leave the country! I fear that I won't be able to survive because of the language barriers. The main place I want to go is Spain by the way. Is studying abroad really worth it? I mean what lessons am I gonna learn going to a country where I won't even be able to ask where the freaking bathroom is? The easy answer is learn Spanish but that takes a lot of time and I'm learning a different language currently. Help!

It's DEFINITELY worth it. I was able to get my college to apply my financial aid to study abroad programs. I spent a semester in Taiwan and a semester in Poland for very little money. I only knew a little Mandarin Chinese, and I didn't know ANY Polish. I'd give anything to be able to live those years over again! I made great friends and learned amazing things. I am a better, more capable, more confident person today because of it. I started a new job after college, and two other girls started the same day. We'd all studied abroad in countries that didn't use English as an official language. As I worked in that office, I noticed that most new hires had similar international experiences. We didn't really deal with international clients, but the corporate bosses valued the lessons people learn when studying abroad in very foreign environments. Looking back, I think my study abroad experiences made my resume stand out and probably helped them choose me instead of someone else. I used www.lexiaintl.org, and I highly recommend them. I'd love to get a job with THEM someday!

why would you go to spain if you don't speak spanish? go somewhere where you would feel comfortable. Study abroad is worth it if you want it to be. just like everything else, you get out what you put in; if yo act like you are miserable, it will be the longest trip ever, if you are open to new experiences and cultures, it will change your life forever. i would suggest you go to either England, Scotland, Ireland, or Australia if you are worried about not knowing the language, or you could be ballsy and go somewhere where you do not know the language and take and immersion course. you could also go to a country that speaks a language that you know if you feel comfortable with your level of comprehension. Good Luck!

It is the experience of a lifetime! I'm from New Zealand and spent a year in America going to high school and I can tell you that studying abroad was one of the best experiences of my life up to this point. It was totally worth it. Not only for the educational experience but for the cultural and historical experience too. who cares if you find it hard at first, you will pick up phrases used often quickly such as where the bathroom is. It is easier to pickup a language if you are immersed in it.

Your reluctance is normal, but to really experience this short life we have and feel the thrill of actually living you must take any oppurtunity you have to see this great world we have. Whether it be studying abroad or joining peace corps, or just saving up and going hostelling, you will grow into a more complete person because of it. You will be on an adventure that will not only be fun, but also enlightening. I know for a fact that if you go study abroad you will learn the language pretty darn well whether you want to or not. Spain is absolutely amazing except madrid. I would recommend any country with a different culture. Do not do England or Japan or Australia, I would recommend Spain or The Netherlands or Belgium.

Hi Q, Some of the benefits (but not all) are: - You learn how to survive on your own, without your parents to call up. - You mature a lot by learning how to get by on your own. - You may start learning a new language. - You will become more open-minded. - You can make new friends and get to know their cultural background. - It looks great on any job / college application. - You will learn how to communicate with your hands if necessary. These are the first few that come to mind, but there are many more, like planning your own day, doing your own grocery shopping, learning how to handle money without a seemingly endless supply... I say GO FOR IT! Cheers S
