How do I talk to my parents about being an exchange student?

How do I get my parents to listen to me about being a foreign exchange student?

  • I am trying to convince my parents to let me be an exchange student for the 2010-2011 school year (I'll be a junior that year). Yes, I know it's a long while away, but for these kinds of things you have to sign up early. Anyway, every time I try and talk to my parents about this, they roll their eyes and blow me off like I am crazy. They don't understand how much I want to do this and why. I know they also think it's too much money and too far away for me to go. But when they act this way I get extremely embarrassed because I know they think my dream of being an exchange student is ridiculous so I stop talking. But I've researched a TON of information about why this would be a great opportunity for me. I’ve found plenty of websites that offer scholarships and financial aid and support and connection between the host family and your real family. I’d love to show these sites to my parents, but they won’t listen to me. I’ve even begun a PowerPoint presentation just in case they start listening to me and I can prove to them how much I want this. Being a foreign exchange student has been something I've wanted to do for a very long time and I'm completely passionate and dedicated about doing this. I really think I could have a shot at convincing my parents if I could get them to listen to me and prove my points about this. Any help on getting my parents to listen?

My parents did the SAME exact thing at first... but now I'm going to Brazil at the end of July for a whole year. Do your research, show them you're serious, bring them to a Rotary Youth Exchange meeting (usually held in October) Speaking of Rotary, I would definitely reccomend them, they're who I am working with, and they're AMAZING. They by far the least expensive, and have financial support, plus they're great people who volunteer throughout the whole thing, they don't get paid like the people at AFS for example. Rotary would take very good care of you, and if you show them you're serious in the interviews (usually take place in december) you'll get in no problem. Good luck with your parents, if you need, have them talk to your closest Rotarian. Xoxo!

Your parents may not feel comfortable with such a long program, maybe you should start by telling your parents about a shorter one.

talk you a counselor at your school about it, and tell your parents what he/she says about it. are there any exchange students at your school? if so, invite them to your house for dinner and they can tell your parents about being an exchange student. print off some information from the websites and show them. if the country you want to go to does not speak english, start learning the language yourself to show your parents that you are really dedicated to studying abroad. also, since these trips can be pricey, save all your money, even spare change to help your parents pay for the trip.

Hmm, where were you planning to go? I've never done it before, but I suggest that you talk to your counselor. They're adults and they can kinda talk to parents and convince them sometimes. I know because I've gone to my counselor for a lot of favors to get my parents to say yes to a few things if it is for my own good, and my counselor usually sent my parents an email about it. My parents agreed when my counselor explained the situation, and they let me do whatever I wanted! xD Go talk to your counselor and explain your interest in being a foreign exchange student, and if he/she thinks you're capable, then I bet that they will try to talk to your parents about it. And even if you can't travel this year, there is always college exchanges you can wait for! (My mom always says that to me =__=;) You will be older and more mature, so you parents will probably be more open to paying for your exchange.
