How can I convert my J1 exchange program Visa to a F1 student Visa?

  • I know I can change my J1 Visa to a F1 Visa, but I don't know how can I do that. I 'm currently in US for study (in high school). Originally, I can graduate this year, however, something changed and I have to be a junior. I'm going to graduate next year, but I need to change my J1 Visa to a F1 Visa. How can I do that (without leaving the country) and what do I need?

    To change your status you need to re-apply to your school or to a new school and receive what is known as an I-20 from them. Once you have the I-20 you need to file Form I-539 to change your status, the form can be downloaded from below - I suggest you read the instructions carefully before filing.
