Can I get into a good university??

Can I get into a good university like Georgia Tech or U of M?

  • I am currently living in Dubai and am planning to attend university in the USA but my parents are only going to pay the monster fees if I get accepted by a good university like the ones I mentioned above. I am planning to study either aerospace or petroleum engineering. I am an honor student in high school with As in every subject and am pretty hopeful that I will get As in my O levels too. Combine that with a 4/5 or a 5/5 in all four AP subjects that I am taking(Math, physics,Chem,Econ) and a SAT score of 2000 or above and will that be good enough? My favorite sport is baseball and I have played in a baseball team in my area. I have virtually no infractions in high school and have never broken the law in any way possible. So what are my chances? And please feel free to recommend other universities if you think that I may not be good enough for the ones I mentioned.

  • Answer:

I got in to Georgia Tech with around a 2100 on my SAT and 33 on my ACT..but I also took the most challenging courses offered at my high school (IB and AP ). Colleges, like Georgia Tech, want to see students who push themselves academically in high school. Also, a good amount of extracurriculars and leadership roles look great on an application. Georgia Tech is ranked as one of the best universities in the world for engineering, and is currently ranked 4th in the nation for engineering. It is no doubt and incredible school, but it has a much higher acceptance rate than most schools that are ranked similarly (MIT, Stanford etc). Its definitely worth applying. And just to clarify with some of these other posts, Georgia Tech does not accept letters of recommendation

Your SAT score is a bit low. Try for above a 2100. Maybe take more AP classes. Do lots of community service. Colleges are so competitive these days!

For "good" schools, try MIT, Caltech, UChicago, along with all the Ivys. Your chances are pretty low at all of these schools, but they are low for everyone, so it's worth an application. As aren't good enough, class rank is what really matters. If you are in the top 5% of your class, you increase your chances of getting in. If you're below the top 10%, your chances drop a lot. But apply. Also, make sure the school offers your major. Also, for the good schools, join more than 1 club. And work.

I would encourage you to apply to the schools, your SAT scores can go up with more practice and make sure your personal statements and letters of recommendations are really good.
