Should I study abroad?

Why dont my parents let me study abroad? its as if they are chosing my career not me...?

  • i know this is a common question but my case is a little different. im 18 years old, and i just graudated from high school. i applied to one of the local universities against my will and i will begin in the spring semester... problem is its literally impossible to convince my parents about it, and no one that i know really can help since my parents are very stubborn... only way i know requires huge balls and i am not kidding... first step is to cancel application to local university, second is to wait till september 2012 so i can apply to universities abroad. and final step is to put up with all the depression im going to be through for a year... to me a year is definitely worth it but my parents wont make it easy on me and thats what im really worried about.. in case ur wondering, i want to study english literature, because obviously i love english and i want to learn it in the us cause i want to experience life in there, i want to experience being independent... my friend who went to liverpool is a completely different person now and i am a little jelous of him... well maybe toomuch but dont get me wrong im not planning to study abroad just cause im jelous.. and one last reason why i want to study abroad... i simply dont want my parents to chose where i should study... i really regret letting them chose in the first place !! heres something i thought about... what if i dont get accepted? ill simply re apply to the local colleges in here... believe it or not its a definite yes in here since the colleges in here are government colleges... i cant study here then continue abroad as a transfer student because i only get one scholarship... im really REALLY DESPERATE to study abroad because its only one chance that you get in your entire life and i dont want to waste it !!! guys tell me what would you do in my place? do you have any advice for me? sorry for my shitty grammar...

  • Answer:

Your parents are more switched on than you think. You can't just decide to go to the USA to study; they don't accept students like that. The first thing you will have to do to find out all of the facts is ring the American Embassy in London and make an appointment to speak to someone about it. I'll warn you now, it is extremely difficult to get into the US to go to uni there. They only accept foreign students on specific courses of study and you will have to have alternative accommodation address in case you can't get on to campus. You have to report regularly to make sure they authorities can keep track of you; and don't even think of staying in the US once you've graduated; that's a whole new ball game!

Go to the local college and study. ALL knowledge is good and powerful. This will make you better prepared for study abroad AND it will prove to your parents that you are serious about school. Most parents would be reluctant to drop serious cash for study abroad because they fear child may be prone to things other than education once there even if been great student here. lots of things change when mom and dad are 1000's of miles away and all choices are your final decision. prove your sincerity to your parents and to yourself for 2 trivial semesters here and you will go abroad far better prepared as a person, student, and adult than you would right now.

It is good to study your Undergraduate at home, then Postgraduate abroad :)

I think their point is, if you want to study abroad then do it with your money not theirs.
