Is medical school in the US too long?

UK undergraduate to US Medical school?

  • Hey, so I was just wondering if I can go from a UK undergraduate to a US medical school because I was recently looking at some US medical schools and one of them (BU) said that there students have to be from an accredited Canadian or US university, is this the case for all US medical schools? can i still go?

  • Answer:

The majority of US medical schools require you to have attended a minimum of one year at a US university. They want you to take, or retake, the pre-req courses during this year. In my opinion, it's an antiquated concept, but since it exists, it's something that has to be done. Now, there are some schools that don't have this requirement. Cornell is one of them, but you'll have to research each school to find the ones that don't require the one year undergrad.

You should be able to - A-levels are generally taken as equivalent to the first year of university in America, as the UK has an extra year of high school (Year 13 - they stop after 12th grade in American schools but then do an extra basic year at university equivalent to A-levels). However, it is way, way, way more expensive to go to uni in the USA, plus the cost of living is pretty high, even with the weak dollar, and medical insurance is VERY expensive. And if you have an American medical degree, it's not considered nearly as good as a British one in most UK hospitals.
