How to study nutrition?

I want to study to be a psycaiatrist but have backgroundnd in nutrition?

  • So I want to work with eating disorders in the future. I really want to be a psychiatrist specializing in eating disorders, but when I see my dietitian it is so fascinating! I figure because nutrition is such an important part of eating disorder treatment. I am only in 10th grade...but YES, im planning this now! lol. so could i do an undergrad in nutrition and move on to psychology or how does this work?

  • Answer:

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor. You would need to complete 4 years in college, 4 years medical school and a 4 year psychiatry residency. You can do your undergrad in any field as long as you take the prerequisites required for medical school. Psychiatrists provide medication and don't do as much talk therapy as counselors or psychologists; which is what I think you are referring to. If you want to become a counselor or psychologist you need to major in psychology not nutrition. Majoring in nutrition won't aid you in providing therapy. A counselor or therapist has a Masters degree (2-3 years) in Psychology in addition to a Bachelors degree. A psychologist has a PhD or PsyD in Psychology (4-6 years) in addition to a Bachelors degree.
