I have been looking at a couple of foreign exchange programs?

and have a question about the rules in them. The two organizations I have been researching are the Rotary Youth Exchange and the AFS Intercultural programs. Now, both have the general rules (the ones that will get you deported back to the U.S.) of no driving a motor vehicle while abroad and no use of illegal drugs while abroad, but the Rotary exchange also states, "No romantic involvement or sexual activity during the exchange". The AFS does not have this rule stated anywhere. My question is, is this rule just some unspoken guideline that they feel they shouldn't have to state, or is it perfectly acceptable as long as it is within the bounds of the exchange country's laws and social standards? Any help will be greatly appreciated, as the answer may decide which organization I choose to do business with.

Answer:
Rotary is much stricter in personal relations than either YFU or AFS. Here is YFU's "Hints and Suggestions" on dating: "Many host families suggest it is better to encourage the students to go out in groups rather than to develop a “steady” relationship with one person. Steady dating cuts students off from other contacts and can also take time away from family activities" And the policy on pregnancy (or getting someone pregnant): "Policy: For medical reasons, placement and personal consideration, female students found to be pregnant while on the Youth For Understanding program will normally be returned home immediately after notification of the natural parents. Individual circumstances may justify exceptions to this policy; however, all students will be considered for Early Return. Male YFU students who cause pregnancies while on program will be subject to the same policy as females." The reality, many students will have boyfriends/girlfriends while on an exchange -- the bottom line, keep it zipped!

I would imagine that all programs have a rule stating that your behavior should set a good example - remember, you are representing the USA *and* the exchange program. Students who become pregnant or cause a pregnancy will be sent home due to legal issues - it's not a moral judgment or anything like that. In the case of a student becoming pregnant, it's also a health issue.

Hi, I guess these rules exist everywhere. You may be better off with AIESEC as there have been many instances of AIESEC interns getting married to people they dated during exchange programs! Check ou the link http://www.aiesecus.org/internationalinternships.html Get in touch with your nearest AIESEC chapter at the earliest and they will be the best people to help you out. All the best.
