Where should I study abroad this summer?

What's the best company to apply through for summer study abroad for college students?

  • I'm wondering if anyone has had a summer abroad experience that they would highly recommend. I am finding a lot of information on the internet for different study abroad programs, but personal recommendations in my experience are always more valuable. I've heard horror stories about scams or unorganized programs, so I'm hoping to avoid that. I'm a current sophomore at a well-respected liberal arts college looking to travel the summer between my sophomore and junior years. I'm open right now to almost anything-- any internship would be ideal, but volunteering or classes at a university are possible as well. I am nearly fluent in Spanish, so I'm thinking either Spain or Latin America. Knowledge about these areas would be ideal, but is not at all necessary in your response. Has anyone had an amazing summer abroad experience? If so, what company did you use? Thanks in advance!

If at all possible, apply through your school. They'll have programs that they know are reliable and where the credits will get accepted easily. Independent companies can be really hit-or-miss, and the costs are usually a lot higher because they are for-profit. You might be able to get financial aid as well if you go through the school. Lots of schools have international campuses where you can register for the summer. I think Miami of Ohio has one in Rome, Georgetown has one in London, etc. and your school should be familiar with these. Internships will also be a lot less expensive if you go through your school because there will be no "finders fee" and things of that kind. See if your school has a relationship with any large corporation in the area and if they'll take you for the summer.

I agree. Look to your school first. Study abroad companies (yes, they are companies, not "programs) are mainly interested in separating you from your money. They are not as "disorganized" as they appear ... it's just that their focus is on your wallet. If you need to choose a company, my only experience was with YFU ... and they were terrible.
