    In Britain: oxford, cambridge, UCL, KCL, LSE. but there are others, depending on your field of study. the tuition fee is also another factor to consider. other good options would include warwick, kent, east anglia, middlesex, nottingham... you may find it useful to check out the rankings. they are available online. france: paris IV sorbonnes, paris descartes, paris pantheon, bordeaux...

Well it varies for whatever subject you want to do. Look at The Times university table or the Guardian University table (http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/table/2011/may/17/university-guide-agriculture-forestry-food). You can change the subject via the drop down menu to see which university is considered the best (and what university offer the course you want to do). As for french universities, in the World's top 100 universities 2011 ranked by Times Higher Education only two featured in the top 100: École Polytechnique and University of Paris, Pantheon-Sorbonne but again they have different reputations depending on the subject. They have a different higher education system than the UK. The best students try and get into the 'grandes écoles' which are usually maths/ engineering etc focused.
