What does a production assistant do?

Production Assistant in the field of entertaintment?

  • does anyone know what classes I can take to become a Production assistant in Los Angeles, and do you know how much it pays?? i would like to take a short term class in that field.. thanks

  • Answer:

You don't need any classes or degree in order to get a job. A degree can help, but it's far from required. A PA is the entry level job into the film industry, in most cases. You're a gofer. The pay is crap. But as the other poster said, once you get in, you can parlay that into better jobs in future. It's 100% who you know, in that industry, and a lot of the real knowledge is gained on the job, rather than in class. Still, as I said, it can help to have a degree behind you. It makes you a more appealing candidate, and more promotable. Any field will do, to be honest, although a lot of people study writing or film or theater.

I don't think you need any particular classes. Several of my classmates paid their bills and got exposure into the industry by doing PA work. I'm not sure how much it pays, but I'm quite sure it's crap. This is a great way to get into entertainment IMHO, no matter what you want to do because it really is about who you know, not what you know in this field.
