Do I have to take the TOEFL?

Do I need to take TOEFL?

  • I'm applying for transfer to a college in the U.S. and I need to know if I've got to take TOEFL. Here's my case. I am a U.S. citizen (born in the U.S.A). I am not a "native" speaker of English since my parents are from India. But I started speaking in English when I was 3, and I've been speaking ONLY in English since I was four and a half. I can't even speak in my parents' language (I'm not proud of it, but that's the way it is) I went to school in India. Someone told me that I need to take TOEFL because of this. The problem is that it feels rather silly having to prove that I know English when it happens to be the only language I'm really comfortable with...(for goodness sake, I think in English!)..not to mention the $150 fee According to the school I'm applying to, I'm a domestic applicant (not international)

  • Answer:

Well, it seems you've known the answer. You've asked your future college, and they said you don't have to, so don't. You are native speaker, since you were born in US. If you were educated in English more than 2 years, then absolutely you won't need TOEFL. Instead you need to take SAT/ACT.
