  • I would like to become a pharmacist, but I'm a bit confused about the studying. Please give me some answers that would help me through my education. I would also like to know what's the best way to become one. Thank you.

  • Answer:

study: biology, chemistry, physics and math. you basically need the same prep as you would for medical school, with maybe a little bit more emphasis on the chemistry. in college, take pre-med or pre-pharmacy courses.

Pharmacists are a specialized advanced degree earner. That means they received either a bachelors or in some cases a partial bachelors degree and 4 years of medical training. To become a pharmacist you should go to a school that has pharmacy as a college or graduate major. Like Purdue University http://www.pharmacy.purdue.edu/students/prospective/ProfCurr.php In this case Purdue makes you take 2 years of prerequisites mostly math and science and then you apply to be accepted to the Pharmaceutical doctorate program. You take six years of college and don't have to finish a bachelors as it is part of your total schooling. http://www.pharmacy.purdue.edu/academics/prepharm/ You can take a two year program at other schools which are usually called pre-pharmacy and then apply to a pharmacy college. I would not suggest this as it is easier to get into a pharmacy college through taking prereqs at the same university. As for what to study in high school. You should focus on biochemistry and mathematics. That means Biology 1 and 2 Chemistry 1 and 2 and if you can take the AP's instead of the regular courses try to do that. Also if biochemistry itself is offered try to take that. In college focus again on the required courses that the program suggests usually biology chemistry and an advanced algebra although some schools require calculus.
