Study Abroad: How Manageable is London?
-
I'm a college student from Boston thinking of studying in either London or a smaller city like Cork, Glasgow, or Liverpool. London sounds really exciting, but as a student abroad, I didn't know if London would be overwhelming, or hard to manage. I like cities, but am used to Boston which is much smaller. Any information or opinions would be great - thanks!

Answer:
London is definitely massive, but there is loads of culture and always something to new and fun to discover, I can understand it being intimidating though. I am a big fan of Liverpool, it is a really fun city and is definitely a lot smaller than London or even Glasgow, but all of them are very rich in culture. A lot of universities in London are spread around the city, or parts of an area and lack that campus feel to it. Liverpool is small enough to walk around most places and is a campus university. Glasgow is interesting as well, but I personally prefer Liverpool and I haven't been to Cork. I think the biggest thing to consider though is which university has a better program for your major and what are you looking to get out of your experience in the UK.

I have been all mentioned. London is fun but also expensive. It is also easy to get part-time jobs and totally immersed in local culture with good English accent. Cork can be very depressing now because a lot of shops are boarded up in the main streets. However, night life there is great, you get to dance with live bands which are god-smacked. Glasgow has very strange accent, locals are very comfortable with their own group of friends. It is not easy to fit in. But they are very friendly most of the time, in bar, clubs and pubs when you spend lots of money. Lot of police presence in the weekend, so you will be safe going out. Don't bother to get a part-time job here, it is tough due to economic downturn. It also has high anti-immigrant sentiment here so just watch out. Local staff (even in the universities) can give you a hard time getting what you want (delays, no reply on emails, VISA problems, long wait for appointments with counsellors etc) Liverpool has wonderful night life too. The old ware house by the way was converted into restaurants, pubs and museums. A lot of cultural things going on, beatles memorials etc. It is fun. Recently there is riot in the city centre, breaking into Tesco and set it on fire.
