What are the best Art Universities in the UK?

Studying in the UK (I am from Holland)?

  • I am considering studying in the UK, preferably England. I found out a lot of things through the internet, but I can't seem to find all the answers I need. At Dutch secondary schools we have different levels you can be divided into when you leave primary school. I am in the highest level. With that level I can apply to every university in Holland. Does this also count for UK universities? Because I don't understand your secondary schools and grading system? I know that at some colleges in the US you can have different subjects for your bachelor degree. For example, the first semester you can take Spanish, Art history and Psychology and the second semester you can take Ethics, Spanish II and Law. Is this also possible in the UK or do you have to study 'just' one thing (for example Psychology)? For extracurricular activities, are those really important to get into a uni? Is being a member of the Yearbook committee, a student mentor for first years and being one of the founders and writers of the school paper enough? Or do I need to go out and do some volunteer work on top of that? Because I don't know how to manage that with my other activites (for some of them see above) social life, school, homework, and an after school job (16 hours a week)... How do you find a university? Where to start? I know what universities there are here in Holland because I live here. Is there a list of universities in the UK (I prefer England)? I do know Cambridge and Oxford but that's it and I don't think I will get accepted there, haha. How does housing work? Do you live on a campus or do you need to find your own apartment (because I don't think I can afford that, I have to come up with the tuition myself because my parents don't have the money and if I also had to spend a lot on housing...)? Even if you just have an answer to one of these questions, it would be very much appreciated! (I also worry if my English will be good enough, what do you think by reading this? Also, if you don't understand something, please say so and I will (try to) clarify it for you).

  • Answer:

UCAS.COM for all university applications. They have the university website links so you can email the universities, tell them your grades etc. Someone will respond and tell you if your grades are good enough. Money - check with the department of education website in the UK, I think since you are EU you pay home fees, but you may also be eligible for a student loan through the government here. You need to look that up with DFES website though. Good luck oh yeah - brilliant english and any extracurricular activites are a bonus really! Even more if you are applying for medicine, dentistry - that kind of stuff

Firstly, I think your English is very good and I have understood everything. I should think your Extra curricular activities are enough - they are not as emphasised here in the UK as they are in the USA. I think that you have to study just one thing unless you take a joint degree (for example Psychology and English.) In most universities they provide on-site accomodation and this will be desribed on the universities website. There are many universities in the UK and here is a website with University Rankings just to give you an idea. If you want to go to a large city I wouldn't recommend London as a foreign student as it will be very expensive, instead maybe Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds. Or if you want somewhere in a quieter location maybe somewhere like Loughborough, Keele. Hope that helps and good luck with everything.
