Which Canadian University should I choose?

Which American University would you choose?

  • I have a year abroad next year and I have to choose from these universities: Lehigh University (PA) University of Maryland at College Park University of Massachusetts at Amherst State University of New York at Buffalo The Pennsylvania State University Midwestern and Southerly Destinations Indiana University University of Kansas Marquette University (WI) North Carolina at Charlotte Purdue University (IN) University of South Carolina Tennessee at Knoxville University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee University of Miami West Coast Destinations University of California: Los Angeles Berkeley Davis Irvine Riverside San Diego Santa Barbara Santa Cruz Where would you go and more importantly why? I Like warm weather so which places would be best in this regard?

  • Answer:

I wouldn't go to CA if you paid me. Lots of smog, traffic and very expensive cost of living there. not to mention earth quakes. Purdue is one of the smallest colleges up there. Which can be very nice. classes are smaller, you can get to know more students and teachers. Penn State and UMass are two schools with very good reputations. University of IN and UT are great schools too.

Being a 20 minute drive from KU, I would not want my child to go there. Those that I have known that came from there do not seem like they understand what they need to do. Try UNL.

I think I would go with UC San Diego, Santa Barbara or Irvine. All are respectable schools, on the coast of Southern California, and are in safe areas. From any of these three, you would have numerous weekend and day trips and could see a good deal of California. I skipped Los Angeles (UCLA) as I think being a foreigner in the middle of a large city, with a fair amount of crime, could put you at risk. Of the three, Irvine is the most urban and the closest to LA. Santa Barbara is the most rural, but has the best location, right on the beach. San Diego is a medium sized beach city that is on the border with Mexico and probably has the warmest weather. I don't think you could go wrong if you picked any of these three.

If climate is the most important factor, choose southern California. This year it has been warm in the midwest and Tennessee up until today, but that's unusual. It is not simply warm in the south, it can be very hot from late spring to early fall. Massachusetts and Buffalo will have cold and snowy winters. So will the Wisconsin locations.
