Basically, GRE is necessary for applying to graduate schools except of business schools in order to to pursue a master's or Ph.D degree. It's a computer-based exam like TOEFL. It consists of 3 parts: 1) Verbal 2) Math 3) Writing. You'll get a score from each part. For verbal and math, you can get a point between 200-800 and for writing you can get a point between 0-6. It's one of the factors to get acceptance to the graduate school you applied. Generally, your Verbal + Math score is considered. It's a kind of minimum criteria to get acceptance and you don't have to get a very high score mostly. But, if you want to get a scholarship or an assistanship, its importance might be higher.
