Foreign Exchange Student?
-
I would love to join a foreign exchange student program and take a year of high school in another country! Though I would like a little more insight on the subject. If you have ever been a foreign exchange student, where are you from and where did you travel to? How old were you Overall how was your experience Would you recommend it to other students And if you have ever hosted a foreign exchange student, what country are you from and what did you like and dislike about the experience?

You should really go on exchange! I haven't been yet, but I am next year! I'm going from the US to France with AFS Exchange program. When I go I will be 17 years old. I haven't actually made the exchange yet, but already I would recommend it to other students! Check out these great websites for more information. :) http://www.usa.afs.org/usa_en/home http://www.asse.com/United_States/about_asse.htm http://www.yfu-usa.org/ http://www.aspectfoundation.org/study_abroad/index.html http://www.cci-exchange.com/abroad/programs_abroad.shtml I would really recommend going with AFS, which is the first link I gave you. Also, here is a forum with alot of exchange students, it has alot of information and tons of students who have already been on exchange, so you can talk with them, and others who are going to be going abroad. http://www.cultures-shocked.org/forum/ If you have any other questions feel free to email me.

Two of my cousins went to Paris. One was for a semester of college and she absolutely loved it. The other was a junior in high school and she went for a year and the first family she stayed with was really mean to her and she ended up having to switch families. After that I think she had a good time. I would say just go for a semester not a year.

I'm a college student from Puerto Rico. A year ago I went on exchange to Massachusetts. I know that wouldn't really sound like an exchange to you, but it was for me. It was a very interesting experience. I grew a lot as a person and realized how important family is. You should definitely consider doing it.

I'm going to be hosting a spanish foreign exchange student starting in August, and it's really going to be an experience for her! There are several exchange programs around, just keep googling until you find one that you would like to host you. The exchange student we are getting is 15 years old, and she is so excited to learn American culture! I would suggest that exchange students be outgoing and willing to adapt to new environments, because YOU need to adapt to their ways, not the other way around. I think it's a wonderful opportunity and I would highly suggest it, if you are ready to handle the responsibility!

Hi! Being an exchange student is a great experience. We've hosted 12 now and 11 have been fantastic! Pretty good odds! We've had them from Switzerland, Finland, Sweden, Brazil, Denmark and Germany. You don't actually "join" an organization to be an exchange student. The best thing to do is check with your school counselor for a recommendation. Chances are you either have, or have had, exchange students in your school and the counselor will have an idea of the good programs Generally, AFS, YFU and Rotary are the most reputable. Rotary is the cheapest, but most competitive. It 's not a bad idea to "interview" a couple of organizations and see which one suits you best. Make sure whichever one you pick is on the CSIET list (www.csiet.org) or you might have trouble getting your year to count. As for the rest of your questions, I'm going to refer you to an on line community of current and former students who have lots of great experiences and advice to share! http://www.exchangestudentworld.com/ Good luck -- this is a great experience!
