What is the best book to study for the MCAT?

My parents want me to study over summer?

  • I'm not saying this is a bad thing but here let me explain a few things first. I'm going into high school and in 8th grade I worked hard and got into honors bio for 9th grade. So I'm in 1 honors class and my parents are always telling me I should study on my own, college is coming up, I shouldn't spend time on my computer. Don't get me wrong, I do want to do good, I actually even want to try to get into honors math for 10th grade. The thing is I don't think studying now over summer will help me much. My brother is taking the MCAT soon and he sat me down and taught some biology from an MCAT book. I guess they'll help me be familiar with the work the day I go into school but that's about it. I don't think studying now will be effective cause I don't even know if the material I learn will be helpful on the tests and quizzes. I think I don't want to study because in 10th grade I don't think it's possible for me to go into chemistry honors. Because my math is too low, I'm suppose to be in math honors for 9th grade in order to get into chem honors for 10th grade, yet I still got into bio with a low level math. I'm not sure but it's all messed up. This really sucks for me and I'm not sure what's gonna happen cause I haven't talked to my guidance consuler yet. Also, I'm mainly considered about my geometry as of now because I think I could get an A in bio but I was even that good in math. I'm not even sure what I want to be when I grow up, I always thought chemistry was a cool subject and I may take AP chem if it's possible in 12th grade. I don't want to be a doctor though because I don't want to go to med school for 10 years. I want to be something in the medical field, maybe a pharmacist or someone who works with chemicals and reactions a lot. What should I do?

  • Answer:

Well, I suggest a compromise...you have obviously been working really hard already,to be in the honors classes, but your brain does need some relaxation and 'creative time' as well, so you don't get burned out and over stressed about it all.Having said that, if you really want honors chemistry and to go into a chemistry field, you do need to be good in math...much more so than in biology, because chemistry consists of mathmatical equations and formulas that must be precise to get accurate results (and not blow up the lab, haha). And I think it is important to always be learning new things, it is how we grow. I suggest you turn your studying into 'research' into fields you might be interested in pursuing as a career, and in that way you will be learning what it takes to get there, if it is really for you, and be able to a more focused study that should help satisfy your parents..and hey, what better way to research than on your computer, where you can get a quick and discreet break to 'study' something fun, haha. Have a good summer, and good luck!
