Can a Canadian citizen go to an American Medical School after completing undergrad in the US?
-
Ok, so I'm in grade 11 at a school in Ontario, Canada, and I was on the Yale university website today and there is a paragraph saying that is "extremely difficult" for international students to gain admission to US medical schools, and that this should be considered before applying to an undergrad program in the US if they plan on studying medicine. Here is the actual paragraph from the website: Special Note to International Students Intending to Study Medicine It is extremely difficult for international applicants who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States to gain admission to U.S. medical schools. State-supported medical schools rarely consider international applicants for admission, and those private schools that do accept applications generally require that international students place in escrow an amount ranging from one to four years’ tuition and fees (USD 40,000–200,000). There are very few scholarships available for medical schools in the U.S., and to qualify for U.S. government-sponsored loans, the applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident. International applicants who are considering a career as a medical doctor and hope to receive their education at an American medical school should think carefully before applying for admission to an undergraduate program in the United States. SO I AM FREAKING OUT RIGHT NOW! If I decide to go to medical school after my undergrad (which I am doing in the US for personal reasons), does that mean that I will not be able to go to medical school there!? And if worse come to worse, could I still go back to a Canada and go to medical school there? I would greatly appreciate if people with any further insight (specifically those who are NOT US citizens or permanent residents and ARE studying medicine there) could help me. And one last thing, is this the same with American Law Schools too? Thank-you so much!

Answer:
You will find it difficult to gain admission in a US medical school as you are an international student. As you are Canadian, you might have a slight chance but I wouldn't count on it. Yes you can go to a Canadian medical school as they follow the same system of medical education as the US. No, it is not the same with US law schools. However there are differences in US and Canadian law meaning that a US law degree would be worthless when you return to Canada

Studying anything in the US as a non-citizen is very hard, because most scholarships are limited to US citizens and so is most student aid. This is especially the case for medical school. The visa and immigration system in the US is very harsh in general. Though it's not impossible, you should not assume that you will simply be able to go, as there's really quite a bit risk it won't be possible. On the other hand, if you do an undergrad program in the US, you should have no trouble going to medical school in Canada. Having graduated from a Canadian medical school, if you were later to get a work visa or Green Card you could (with some work) be allowed to practice medicine in the United States.
