How to host a foreign exchange student from japan?

Foreign exchange??

  • i want to be a host family for foreign exchange student from japan. what is a good program for that? and do you have any comment on it?

  • Answer:

Hi! I'm sure you'll love the experience! It's always great to find a host family and most programs work with Japan. The best way to find a good program is to contact the school where the student will attend. There are over 100 programs out there and many schools will only allow a few (if not just one) to place students. Usually there are only limited spaces in the school as well. So, if you find the organization first, you might have some difficulty with the school. It's usually the guidance counselor who handles the students and organizations, so you should start there. You might give them a call when the new semester starts in January. Most organizations will begin recruiting families then as well. If there is more than one organization that places in the school, get the contact information for all of them. You should schedule an interview with each organization -- remember, they need you more than you need them. Select the organization with the representative you feel most comfortable with. Ask if they get paid to place the student! Most do and that's not a problem -- they can still be good quality programs, but they should be open about it with you. Reliable programs tend to be AFS, Aspect, Rotary, YFU. In general, as a host parent you are financially responsible for room and board. The student does NOT have to have his/her own room, but that's optimal of course. The student will pay all his/her school related expenses, personal expenses and come with comprehensive travel insurance that included medical coverage. Host families can be single parents with or without kids or couples with or without kids. There is no financial criteria, although hosting should not strain you financially. You will be required to pass a background check and have good community references. I hope this is helpful! Here is a site that will give you more information on the exchange student experience. It is written from their point of view, but it may be interesting for you. http://www.exchangestudentworld.com/ Good luck and happy hosting!

Our family was host to an exchange student from Japan last July/August. It was a wonderful experience! It was definitely worth it, and if you want to do it, then go for it. Just remember that you'll have to spend time with the student and help them out: new language + new country = a very difficult time The organization we found was called AFS. They were particularly good in that the quality of the students' stays I feel was particularly high. Actually, there are a number of exchange agencies out there that likely need host families. Check out: -ASSE -YFU -AFS All of these are popular exchange programs, and their track records seem pretty good. Hope this helps!

You don't recruit foreign exchange student hosts this way. The institutions involved work out suitable arrengements for the students. So you might want to liasse with the institutions involved.
