Foreign Exchange to France?

How much french should you know before going to france for a foreign exchange program?

  • I'm in High school and debating whether to go to France or Ireland or England for a foreign exchange program. I love Ireland for what I've heard about the land and how nice they are, i love english/british people. But i love everything French, I've been in french for, this is my 2nd year. Is that enough?

  • Answer:

Can you carry out a conversation in French? Have you ever read French books, watched French movies/TV? You need to be aware of two language teaching concepts: BICS - Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills. The ability to shop, take taxis, have conversations with friends. CALP - Competent Academic Language Proficiency - being able to read write and understand textbooks and terminology in French. To be able to write a composition with few errors and covering the required topic. Your call!

I am thinking of doing the same! I am a freshman in French 4 at my University and I need to study abroad there for my junior or senior year. I can understand written French and I'm starting to understand spoken French better. I think what you have is good enough because you will learn so much more when you are there but it's always good to be prepared. Some good ways to practice and brush up on your French may be to do some online activities (Le Point du Fle is a really good site for these!), watch some movies in French (like Disney movies or French films) also, picking up a phrase book isn't a bad idea either! Hope my advice helps you. Good luck!
