Which city in Spain should I study abroad?
-
I'm studying abroad this fall in Spain to study an intensive semester of the Spanish language. I have many cities to choose from, including Malaga, Granada, Barcelona, Bilbao, Madrid, Salamanca, and Santander. I am trying to base my decision based on a few things: Sites to see Things to do Nightlife Safety Proximity to other cities/places of interest. I am leaning towards a city on the water in southern Spain, pretty much eliminating Madrid, Bilbao, and Santander. However I'm open to any suggestions as well as personal experiences that could change my mind.

Barcelona!!! accept no other answers and i promise you will thank me for years and years to come! I go on personal experience and there is not enough space to tell you here; the nigthlife is awesome, the art and architecture is unbelievable, you have the esscence of las ramblas day and night! so many sites, the most amazing cathedral in the whole world still being built la sagrada familliare, but the best thing is the culture, it is a little different than spain and has a uniqueness that will go with you wherever you go in life! good luck, i travelled and still do all over spain and have to say barcelona is a great place to be young!!! Good Luck

Barcelona is nice, as previous answers said, but bear in mind that here in Barcelona many of us speak Catalan. (even if we all are bilingual and speak Spanish perfectly)

Definitely Barcelona. One of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Barcelona is the city which most foreign students choose although it's perhaps the least secure of the main Spanish cities. Nightlife is good, although not fantastically original, and you have beaches in the city. The Catalans though have a reputuation for beaing the least sociable of all Spaniards more info here: http://www.the-barcelona-guide.com/ Salamanca has a great reputuation as a university town, perhaps the only one in Spain Granada and Seville are both pretty cities and VERY Spanish. The people in Andalucia tend to put a lot of emphasis on going out and are extremely sociable. No beach though Malaga is pretty touristy and non-descript, though does have a beach Madrid for me is one of the friendliest capital cities around. Less cool than Barcelona but the vibe in the bars is better, probably because it's not overrun by tourists. Has the best transport connections in Spain, 3 hours by AVE from almost anywhere, and very close to pretty cities like Segovia, Salamanca etc. Long way from the water though!

SANTANDER!!!!! I participated in a fabulous program, called HomeStay Spain in SPAIN. After speaking with other kids in the group who had participated in other exchange programs abroad we decided this was the best! If you are interested in a lifestyle immersion experience and willing to learn about Spanish Culture and Lifestyle, this is the most amazing program available. The beautiful and safe town of Santander is known for its cultural refinement, and an atmosphere typical of old Spain. It is so much fun!!! It was so enriching. I LOVED IT!!! Both my sister and I participated different summers and we had a blast! We made so many good friends we still keep in touch with! The program is really well planned out and people are lovely! Many host families have teens. They even allow you to come with a friend to stay in same host family home or in a different home. And if you sign up early they allow you to choose from the available host families for a perfect fit. Check their website www.beautifulspain.com It is the most preferred Exchange Student Program In Spain!!!! This program is considered the most complete exposure to a foreign country as it combines CLASSES (art, debate, street talk, folklore, among others) with FUN and EXCITING ACTIVITIES such as Latin Dance Classes, Bullfight, Boat Excursion, etc…, FULL DAY OUTINGS to places of historical and cultural interest such as prehistoric Altamira Caves, Guggenheim Museum, Roman Ruins, "Capricho de Gaudi", Roman Route, Guggenheim Museum, etc,…
