Should I study abroad?

Should I study abroad? How was your study abroad experience?

  • I've never been away from home for longer than a month. I don't think I could make it 4 months... I'd get homesick. What do you think?

  • Answer:

My personal opinion, everyone should study abroad or at least try it. I'm currently living in Russia with Rotary Youth Exchange (great program if you don't have one yet) and I'm loving it. I've been moving around my entire life however, and have spent lots of time away from most of my family already so transitioning was easy for me. I mean I'm going to be going back to them soon anyway, and I know that. I know a girl here in Russia that when she arrived was like you, her name was Rosanna and when she arrived she couldn't speak a word of Russian or English. It took her about 3 months and she was able to converse with many people because she studied very hard and refused to go home. By the end of the year she was nearly fluent, and that's when she told me the first months she cried a lot and wanted to go home everyday, but she stuck with it and she said its the best thing she's ever done. Before she was a scared little 16 year old girl dependent on her parents, and now she's just the opposite. Moral of my story, try study abroad at least for a little while. You learn so much in a little amount of time the benefits are well worth it. The homesickness, goes away once you make new friends. Think about it, you have to leave sometime anyway, why not do it now under your own force?

I went a 4-week study abroad to Thailand when I was an undergrad (It was a short course between semesters). It was a good experience even though I had traveled abroad previously for nearly as long before, although not on my University's dime. Definitely consider it if your school will give you a scholarship to cover all/part of the costs. And if you're homesick or whatever, I'm sure you could teach your parents how to use Skype so you can video chat and talk to them while you're away, or at least e-mail (it depends on where you study abroad at how good of Internet you will likely have access to though!).

I also feel the same way as you did. And i did not take the chance to study abroad.
